How to Bold Text in WhatsApp Android App

Question: I often receive WhatsApp messages from friends with bold text. I tried looking for the bold text feature in WhatsApp but could not locate any option to do so. How to bold text in WhatsApp?

Answer: If you wish to format text in WhatsApp Messenger to have bold, italic, monospace or strikethrough text, follow these steps:

How to Bold Text in WhatsApp

To bold text in WhatsApp:

  • Type your message
  • Tap and hold on one of the words in the message. You will notice that the formatting icons have appeared on top of the screen. Tap on B to bold your text.

Alternatively, you can place an asterisk * on both sides of the text to make it bold. For example, *THIS TEXT IS BOLD* will make this text appear as THIS TEXT IS BOLD. You can also make only certain parts of the text bold. For example, THIS TEXT IS *BOLD* will generate the following: THIS TEXT IS BOLD.

How to Italicize Text in WhatsApp

To italicize your text in WhatsApp:

  • Type your message
  • Tap and hold on one of the words in the message. You will notice that the formatting icons have appeared on top of the screen. Tap on I to italicize your text.

Alternatively, you can place an underscore _ on both sides of the text to make it italicized. For example, _THIS TEXT IS ITALICIZED_ will make this text appear as THIS TEXT IS ITALICIZED. You can also make only certain parts of the text italicized. For example, THIS TEXT IS _ITALICIZED_ will generate the following: THIS TEXT IS ITALICIZED.

How to Strikethrough Text in WhatsApp

The strikethrough function is not available as an icon in some versions of WhatsApp. So, the action has to be done manually using symbols. In order to make text strikethrough, you have to put a tilde symbol ~ on both sized of the text. The tilde symbol is a bit tricky to locate. Tap on Sym button on your keypad and then 1/2 button to locate the tilde ~ symbol. ~STRIKETHROUGH TEXT~ will make this text appear as STRIKETHROUGH TEXT. You can also make only certain parts of the text strikethrough. For example, ~STRIKETHROUGH~ TEXT will generate the following: STRIKETHROUGH TEXT.

Monospace Text in WhatsApp

If you are wondering what

monospace

text is, it’s basically a type of font where the letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal width. This text is usually used to display a piece of code. In order to use monospace font in WhatsApp, use three backticks ` ` ` symbols on both sides of the text. So, ` ` `MONOSPACE` ` ` will generate monospace font like the one above this paragraph in WhatsApp. Note that for demonstration purpose, spaces were entered between the backticks; however, these spaces are not required.

Using a Combination of Bold, Italic and Strikethrough Text

You can also use a combination of the above formats in WhatsApp. For example, try typing the following: ~*_TEST_*~. This will generate the following text: TEST. As you can see, the text is bold, italicized and stroked through. Just ensure that you place the symbols in order of their appearance.
